Part 1 Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost

It has taken me some time to reach an agreement (with myself) on the quality of this album. It's obviously impressive. Or is it? Is it just keen to impress?
Given time, the solution to this riddle is 'both'. Any band releasing the first part of an alleged opus magnum—surrounded in stories of hard times, change of lineup, what have you—should be prepared to be laughed out of the room. You have to deliver something pretty damned good. And this album just isn't.
Foals reach for headline slots, but also for your heart. You can apparently want the former enough and get it. But you can't fake the latter. This is empty music sounding fantastic.
It's obviously impressive. But most of all, it's keen to impress.
