My main gripe with an earlier Ducktails album was that after repeated listening, it just refused to stay in my head. Pleasant in many ways, the music was reduced to just pleasantness the second it had passed my ears.
This latest effort is better. Simply put, it «immediately command[s] attention, where [previous records] were content to lay indifferently outside of it», as Pitchfork's review states it. As is often the case, it's many small things that add up rather than some dramatic masterstroke: melodies that stand on their own feet, plenty of arrangement details and a general sense that it actually matters.
Playing it cool can sometimes be confused with not seeming to care. For the moment the balance is set right.
